LIW 2012– were you there?

A delegation of FIA staff and myself travelled up to the Birmingham NEC last week for three packed days of everything health and leisure: LIW 2012 – the biggest annual trade show for our sector.
And once again, the show didn’t disappoint this year – it is great to see how members continue to innovate and develop solutions to gaps in the market, with suppliers showcasing some amazing pieces of new kit, including a personal favourite opposite us on the Life Fitness stand – the Synrgy360 which ran a demo loop to keep us entertained.

A big thank you as always to the LIW team who did such a great job on creating our excellent FIA stand – a hub in the middle of all the activity, showcasing the FIA’s achievements and current projects.

It was great to see so many members visiting our stand to find out more about the FIA, to hold meetings or just grab a seat (and a drink – kindly provided by VitaCoco and UltraBody) and relax for five minutes.

My personal highlights included having the opportunity again to give a keynote, which showcased the FIA’s passion and drive for delivering on an Olympic and Paralympic physical activity legacy;  seeing some of our brilliant Team GB athletes at the show including the UK’s most successful gymnast Beth Tweddle, rower Greg Searle and the inspirational weightlifter Zoe Smith (who I made sure I had my pic taken with); and our drinks reception (sponsored by Life Fitness) on Wednesday night, which I think personally was the best yet, with a great atmosphere and band, and a successful raffle for our chosen charity, the Matt Hampson Foundation (see below for the winners). The IOU seminars in the education village were also a huge success, covering a wide range of relevant topics. But the best thing about LIW is always for me and the team to meet our members in person – thank you to everyone who took the time to come and visit our stand.
The FIA stand was a hive of activity throughout the three days, hosting an afternoon tea sponsored by TRX, a lunch for Sporta members, a speed networking session and a dinner and lunch for the leaders in health and fitness hosted buyers’ programme.

We also launched the process for the Flame Awards 2013 at LIW, kicking off with a series of popular seminars presented by myself, David Monkhouse and Mike Hill on what Flame is, how to enter and how to stand the best chance of success. Following on from the success of this year’s awards, we are encouraging operators from across the sector to enter, no matter what their size or business model.
Going back to my keynote speech, I spoke about how together we can achieve more and work towards an ambitious aim of making the UK the most active nation in the world. This is not the FIA's legacy to deliver but the sectors. The FIA is the facilitator, creating partnerships and pathways to help deliver more people, more active, more often. This was reflected in our recent rebrand consultation, which returned an overwhelming ‘yes’ to our keeping this as our mission. I know many of you are very eager to find out more about our new name and brand identity, but you will have to wait until the big reveal at the  Summit in November.
If you missed my keynote you can read a report here summarising the key points.
At such a busy time for all of us working in this sector, it is so rare to be able to have the opportunity to socialise and network in an informal atmosphere. The next time we will see all our members together again now will be at our Summit in November – have you booked yet? The 300 or so of you who came along to the Summit when it re-launched last year will know what an interesting and thought-provoking event it was, and this year we have set ourselves a target of exceeding those expectations with our line-up of high profile speakers. Don’t miss out on being there – if you are an FIA member and you book before 25th October you can also take advantage of an early-bird booking discount. Look out for guest blog posts from some of our speakers, coming soon.
And finally, if the LIW piqued your interest in education and professional development, you can now book for the FIA’s upcoming seminar series on accessing funding and also watch out for our upcoming webinar series– a new membership benefit for FIA members covering topics as wide as retention, social media, music licensing and public health structures. Whether you are an independent operator, manager of a single site or a PT, we will have something for you. Keep up-to-date one what is really going on in the sector.
All will soon be revealed, but in the meantime you can contact colin@fia.org.uk to find out more.
I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events soon; if there were any questions left unanswered at LIW we are only a click or a phone call away – please do keep in touch.

Chris Ryan says, ’Let’s Talk Tactics’

In a taster exert from the opening keynote speech which he will deliver to delegates at the 4th annual FIA Flame Conference in Sheffield next, SAS hero Chris Ryan talks about how his team’s tactics could switch from stealth to violence in a blink of the eye, and how they had to be able to adapt to any situation in order to survive…

“When I was undergoing SAS continuation training, it was drummed in to all of us that the role of a special-forces operator is twofold. Sometimes we would be sent in to gather information: this meant putting in an observation post, lying low, watching and waiting. When that was the case we’d need to go in light – armed, of course, but only with the precision tools we needed for the job. Our role was to stay invisible.

“To do our job with the minimum of fuss and without anybody knowing we were there. If we were compromised, our tactic was to ‘shoot and scoot’ – to engage the enemy if necessary then exfiltrate as quickly and stealthily as possible.

“Sometimes, though, we’d be looking for a fight. If our orders were to take out personnel or installations, our tactics would need to be altered accordingly. Stealth would still be the order of the day at the beginning of the operation. Often we’d be setting up an ambush, so it would clearly be essential that we worked silently and without being seen. If it was possible to take out any of the enemy clinically, with suppressed weapons and without alerting anyone to our presence, we’d do that. One less person to worry about later on.

“At some point, though, we knew things would go noisy. When that happened, the tactics changed. Stealth was no longer our best friend; violence was. We’d use all the weaponry at our disposal to eliminate the enemy completely, or to destroy their installations. If things went according to plan, the operation would go noisy at a time and place of our choosing. Good for us. Bad for the enemy.

“Tier 1 operators need to be equally skilful with the scalpel and the hammer. They need to be the Grey Man, able to merge into the background – which is why a lot of the operators working in Afghanistan wear beards, so they don’t stand out when they’re among the locals in-country. But when the situation requires it, these men must be able to bring all the most brutal forces of war to bear in order to overcome the enemy and achieve their objectives…”

The battle field may be a long way from the gym floor, but the lesson we can all learn as professionals  from Chris, aside from sheer courage and perseverance, is adaptability. As the saying goes, all failure is failure to adapt.

You can hear more of Chris’ extraordinary story at the FIA Flame Conference on 27th June, Sheffield. Places are going fast so book now.

In Search of Excellence

By Tim Webster, FIA Flame Conference programmer

Excellence is the unlimited ability to improve the quality of what you have to offer. Sometimes the improvement is just 1%, but that 1% is often the difference between winning and losing, between the good and the great. Blindingly obvious isn’t it?

This year’s FIA Conference is all about celebrating the fact that we have come a long way as a sector, indulging in a little “what-if” thinking, challenging what we currently do and asking if it could be done better, differently, more efficiently, more cost-effectively or not at all?

Eleanor Roosevelt said: “Do one thing every day that scares you.” This is of course much more difficult than it sounds but if we are to grow our sector we must challenge our own thinking and that of our colleagues each and every day.

As Tom Peters says: “Doing what worked yesterday is always the default option. Thing is, that doesn’t work anymore.”

In my opinion, in order to challenge our thinking we must look outside our own sector at businesses that are doing things differently and so this year’s conference features non-industry speakers from top-to-bottom. That’s a risk in itself, but there’s no point in challenging you to think differently if we aren’t prepared to do the same.

Over the coming weeks and months we aim to bring you some of the thoughts of our speakers at this year’s conference, starting with our keynote speaker, SAS hero Chris Ryan later this week.

‘Our Flame Award gave us the spark to build on our success’

Guest post by DC Leisure

As the deadline for entering this year’s Spark of Innovation Award rapidly approaches in less than a week, DC Leisure look back on winning the first ever Spark and how being recognised by the FIA and the sector for their innovation has helped them build on its success since then.

Last summer, William Gregg VC Leisure Centre, managed by DC Leisure in partnership with Amber Valley Borough Council, celebrated a fantastic win at the FIA & Matrix Flame Awards when we scooped the first Spark of Innovation award.

As one of five finalists, we won the award for our Swim4Health programme - a simple, yet strong innovation based around original thinking and efficient use of resources.

The Swim4Health idea came about from DC Leisure asking the question of how we could get more people swimming and how we could address the potential barriers to participation that exist through what we have learned from a gym setting.

DC Leisure decided to enter the competition as we felt it was an innovative idea and a natural progression for the fitness industry to show diversification of fitness into non-gym areas such as a swimming pool.

After we won the award, Councillor Chris Short, Cabinet Member for Healthier Communities at Amber Valley Borough Council commented: "The Flame awards are the Oscars for the fitness industry, and the partnership achievement here cannot be underestimated.”

For Jackie Goacher, General Manager of William Gregg VC Leisure Centre, winning meant that the hard work of her and her team had been recognised but most importantly it was the recognition from the FIA (Fitness Industry Association) and the sector that their focus went beyond the gym.

The coverage gained since winning this award has provided DC Leisure with further opportunities to develop the programme and attract external partners such as Sport England who are funding the roll out of Swim4Health as well as Kelloggs and the ASA who have invested into a poolside instructor training session for regular swimmers.

In addition DC Leisure has now built links with Weight Watchers and used the Swim4Health programme and Spark of Innovation award as a pivotal point to move this relationship forward.  By tailoring Swim4Health and working in partnership with Weight Watchers DC Leisure are helping tackle the issues of overweight and obesity.

Winning the Spark of Innovation award really was the catalyst for the continued development and success of Swim4Health, and we would encourage any FIA members considering entering either the Operator or Supplier categories of the Award this year to bite the bullet and get their entries in; winning really can change the face of your business.

Entries for the Spark of Innovation must be received by 10th April. Click here for more information on how to enter or call Pete on: 020 7420 8571

Are you the crème de la crème?

There is only a week left to get a 10% early-bird discount on entry to the FIA & Matrix Flame Awards 2012. Have you entered yet?

Established in the 90’s and receiving more and more entries year on year, the longevity and desire to win a Flame award is plain to see. But what is it that makes these the hottest awards in our industry?

Delivered by the FIA for over 15 years, the Fitness, Leadership And Management Excellence (Flame) awards are our crème de la crème industry awards that recognise excellence and best practice within the health and fitness sector.

The strict Flame award criteria and in-depth three stage Flame assessment process offers clubs and centres a rigorous independent business assessment to help benchmark their facility and honour the people who make such a profound contribution to their communities and organisation.

The assessment process may be tough going but this gives the Flame awards their credibility and therefore any club or facility who succeeds in getting a Flame award knows that they are delivering the best quality service in their category.

The 2012 FIA and Matrix Flame process encompasses; stage one qualifying information through an online entry form and participation in a Net Promoter Score (NPS) survey, stage two, the formal assessment through an onsite visit by an independent auditor, Leisure-net Solutions in partnership with Right Directions and stage three a customer satisfaction survey. The winners are announced in front of a large audience of over 800 industry peers at the prestigious Ball of Fire at the Flame Conference in the summer.

You may have seen that earlier this year the Health Club Awards, run by HCM and the National Fitness Awards, run by Workout magazine were launched. These are consumer awards voted by members, which are valid in their own right but do not follow the in-depth and diverse Flame award assessment process.

All I want for Christmas….

With Christmas fast approaching, you may be surprised to hear that the Flame Awards are at the top of my priority list and indeed many of the Industry’s finest!

There’s just a final few days to take advantage of the discounted early bird entry fee so clubs are busy finalising their entry forms, hopeful to remain in the competition until that adrenaline-fuelled final stage – the Flame Awards Ceremony on 13th July 2011; where the winners will be crowned!

Flame began over 15 years ago, born out of a need to recognise those in our industry that are a beacon of Fitness Leadership and Management Excellence.

Over the years, winners have varied and competition has heightened – turning the Flame Awards into the most prestigious and desired in the industry!

Attending some site visits last year (which take place in Stage 2 of the assessing process), it was staggering to experience the intricate planning that sites put into their assessment day. The motivation, energy, eagerness to please and sheer pride is absolutely phenomenal – you really have to admire the professionalism of our assessors that are forced to compare these clubs and not come to the conclusion that everybody should be a winner! With standards so high across all entrants, every single point really does count…

Dawn Spink, 2010 Flame Winner for Club of the Year, The Valley Health & Fitness at EIS Sheffield said:

“Winning was a great achievement for us and the fitness team at EIS. We were short listed the year before, but winning last year showed just how much we improved – enough to win!

After receiving feedback from the Flame assessors, we improved our programme cards by working with head office to change the format. By getting to the final, we learned from the customer satisfaction surveys to improve on our more social aspects and now we do member football tournaments! We have also implemented classes into our timetable; things like outdoor military fitness classes.

My advice to hopefuls is to keep trying and really motivate your team. Make it the best time it can be by including the members, making sure they know it’s their gym, not yours and therefore a reward for both of your hard work!”

So, what are you waiting for? Send me your entry form now!

Merry Christmas,

Hayley Bevan, Events & Sponsorship Manager at the FIA

The LIW Countdown….

Guest blogger Hayley Bevan, The FIA's Events and Sponsorships Manager, counts down the days until Leisure Industry Week 2010 (21st - 23rd September, NEC Birmingham)

The biggest gathering of the health and fitness sector is just around the corner and we at the FIA can’t wait to get back to the NEC!

After over a year of research, debate, consultation and industry-wide feedback, Dave Stalker and the TwentyTen Commission Panel will be announcing the industry’s five year strategy on Tuesday morning in the opening keynote. Something we at the FIA feel very strongly about, it will provide vision and recommendation around the 5 key cornerstones: Community Hubs, Work Place Activity, Data and Consumer Insights, Exercise as Medicine and Up-skilling the Workforce. Devised to generate positive outcomes and direction for the industry, we hope you will join us at the start of the industry’s new journey. How exciting!

Expertly delivered education will of course be on the agenda this year, with something for every single one of us.

The largest gathering of Independent Operators ever has dictated the provision of a specially tailored day of seminars, looking at various topics, all in response to the challenges that independent operators have voiced they face.  Following the age-old “work hard, play harder” life motto – the FIA/IOU members will be found sipping cocktails and chilling out at a rather exclusive bar in the evening - let it not be said that those CFM boys don’t know how to party!

Following fantastic feedback on speakers at the Flame Conference earlier this year, we’re bringing some of them back for follow-on education at LIW!  Personally I can’t wait to hear what else Pete Cohen has to share – his wisdom on happiness was well received in Cheltenham and this time he’ll be looking at how to become ‘exceptional’ – I wonder what that entails!  Joining Pete are Sue Anstiss, Keith Burnet, Georgina Jupp, Michael Crowe and Mark Talley who will each provide insight and debate from their field of expertise.

The FIA has also teamed up with Sport England to host a day of seminars which will look at our industry’s crucial contribution to the Olympic legacy – less than 2 years and counting, the partnership couldn’t have come at a better time…..  Our expert panel will advise on how we can position ourselves as a KEY Olympic partner and what this means for the industry.

Those of you who attended the Ball of Fire in July will understand the sheer competition and motivation that fuels the prestigious annual Flame Awards – and the tension and anticipation that finalists feel as Dave utters those promising words “and the winner is…”.  I am delighted to announce that Flame 2011 will launch at LIW this year and that gruelling (yet enlightening) process of excellence can build again for all who enter!

As always we assume that everyone else takes as much pleasure in social opportunities as we do, which is why we will be buying everyone a drink after the first day of the show!  Matrix and Active IQ have graciously sponsored the FIA Drinks Reception this year, giving members the chance to debrief with colleagues, peers and a special celebrity guest….

As you can see, it’s an action-packed LIW this year, so whilst you get to work planning your itinerary, so shall we!

For more info on the FIA’s schedule of events visit our website, otherwise I look forward to seeing you there!

FIA Conference and FLAME Awards 2010

Well. FLAME has come and gone and I personally feel that all I want to do is find a hole somewhere and sleep for a week.

A fair number of the 700 plus attendees have told me that it was a great success – complimenting everything from the calibre of the speakers, to the new ‘fruit & food grazing’ feeding arrangements.
For me, it was (as always) great to see and meet up with so many old faces - and new. But what really excited me was the attendees’ hunger for knowledge for information on subjects which, even a couple of years ago, would have only attracted enough people for a five-a-side team, let alone pack a room. Topics ranging from applying psychology to our delivery models, to the importance of data, the value of social media and the whole issue of ‘exercise as medicine’ filled session after session.

Thinking about this, as well as the calibre of FLAME Award winners and runners up suggests that there is a real and very tangible sea change in our industry. Everywhere I looked and every conversation I had gave me the feeling that people are taking everything we do and improving it by 50% - whether it’s the graphics on kit or its phenomenal capacity to record and interpret data: whether it’s new programmes which are reaching deeper and more consistently into communities, or the phenomenal work currently being done by a handful of organisations with GPs and health professionals.

Now, this isn’t a cheap plug for the TwentyTen Commission, but there are pockets of excellence throughout our industry; just think of the contribution we could make to the nation (and our own bottom line), if we collated best practice, shared it and used it as a springboard for improving what we do and how deeply we engage with our respective communities. The catalyst to that is the Commission, but the drivers to that are you.

Thinking about drivers makes me think about ‘Movers and Shakers’ ... wait ‘till you see the pics from the Awards ... think Strictly Come Dancing ... then think John Sergeant!
Need I say more ... I don’t think I should, or there will be no greeting of ‘old faces and new’ next year.

FLAME Awards 2010

We in the FIA Events department are experiencing that annual buzz that comes with the entry stage of the FLAME awards – it’s great how enthusiastic all manner of facilities have been already about the FLAME process.  The main question on everyone’s lips at the moment is: “How can we WIN??”  Well obviously we can’t answer that question – cheating is certainly not a quality that we look for in a FLAME winner…  But to help you on your way this year, we will be running FLAME Training Workshops (run by our very own FLAME assessors), which will be invaluable in learning tips on what Fitness Leadership & Management Excellence really looks like.  The workshop not only offers a great opportunity to grasp a real understanding of the ins and outs of the FLAME process, but it will also act as a consultation session for your facility (regardless of whether you enter the awards or not).  Our distinguished FLAME assessors; Tory Brettell and Rebecca Weissbort, are well-known experts in the industry (internationally) with over 40 years of experience between them at all levels in creating, assessing and coaching excellence – a session with them will revitalise your business!  These workshops will run in December 09 – January 10 – call 020 7420 8578 for further details or visit the website.

As always there is lots going on at the FIA at the moment; a new batch of seminars on Exercise and Nutrition launch next week, our Fit For the Future programme is being reviewed by number 10, go is steadily expanding across counties and the MoreActive4Life campaign is nearly ready to go…

Lisa Taylor (from MEND) came to visit us last week to brief the team on the material that has been put together for the MoreActive4Life 2010 Campaign – it really is amazing and motivating stuff!  I’m genuinely excited about the campaign (all of the tools that accompany it are spot on!) and can’t wait to be a campaign guinea pig!  I hope the rest of the industry is as enthusiastic about this as I am and we really can oversee a behaviour change nationally that sees exercise becoming a habit rather than a chore.
